Here are two crucial April meetings!

“HOME FOR ALL” – A ‘Different Kind’ of Housing Discussion

With a goal for better dialogue, to get more people involved in the discussion of housing, and have us functioning like more of a community. Homeowners & renters all need to be a part of the discussion.  PLEASE RSVP ASAP https://www.eventbrite.com/e/community-conversations-housing-in-san-mateo-tickets-59135346413

When: Saturday, April 27. Doors open at 9 a.m. for breakfast and childcare; the discussion runs 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Where: San Mateo High School, multi-purpose room, 506 N. Delaware St. Parking in main lot.

This meeting is sponsored by San Mateo County, who will provide a community facilitator, childcare, food and Spanish translation.  (Similar meetings will also be held in Burlingame, Redwood City, Half Moon Bay, & Portola Valley.)

Fresh voices get noticed!!!  So please bring along friends – especially those that have not been speaking at the General Plan and City Council meetings.

The City website notes:  Although these conversations aren’t part of a specific project or the General Plan update, our community’s perspectives will be extremely valuable as the City evaluates future housing-related policies. The goal is for community members to talk and listen to each other. The first conversation on April 27 will help shape a second conversation on May 18. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment for community conversations and this effort starts with you!

The average cost to fully replace your lateral is about $8,400, with a few hundred extra bucks for the inspection.   As part of the long-term infrastructure improvement project, The Clean Water Program, Public Works staff want your feedback. Staff are proposing a revision to the City’s Sewer Lateral Ordinance.

BHNA NOTE: You may recall from the January BHNA newsletter, there were three options being discussed at that time: Option 1 consists of a required inspection and repair/replacement (if needed) upon title transfer of your property.  Option 2 is to mandate an inspection when you pull a permit for home improvements on your kitchen, baths, pool or spa.  The final option is to combine Options 1 and 2.

Residents are invited to one of two community meetings:

Thursday, April 25 from 6-8 p.m. at the Senior Center at 2645 Alameda de las Pulgas

Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m.- noon at Beresford Recreation Center, 2720 Alameda de las Pulgas. (No RSVP needed for these meetings.)

Staff will present three options for a potential revision to the ordinance. Feedback from these community meetings will inform the proposal to the May 20th City Council Study Session meeting.

Supporting a Good Cause

The BHNA has sought to support our community by making annual donations to local organizations which benefit our area and city.  In recent years, this has included Samaritan House, HIP Housing, the Police Activities League and the Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA).

Most recently, we have given to SMRG – the group tasked with getting a measure on the ballot to allow you to vote on new building height limits when the current height limits measure expires.  Special interests continue to work hard to make sure residents won’t have this vote.  Learn more, and how you can support the SMRG effort at www.smartergrowthsm.com, or by calling 650-539-4930.

There’s a New Mayor in Town

The New Year brings with it a new mayor for San Mateo.  Be advised our new mayor is Diane Papan.  She can be reached at dpapan@cityofsanmateo.org.
